Preface:
Okay, I warned you there would be changes coming to Vinyl Nirvana in 2012! One major change is I will begin offering restored Linn LP-12 Sondeks. For years, I have admired these units from afar. Like the Thorens and ARs I have been restoring, these Linn units are suspended subchassis, belt driven turntables that are essentially manual. The main difference is Linn continues to offer the LP-12 30+ years after its introduction. (Along with a slew of upgrades.) All in all, like the ARs and Thorens, they are exceptionally well-made and I have no hesitation believing they will last for decades if properly cared for.
The Table:
Cosmetically, I would rate this Linn LP-12 Sondek turntable an 8.0/10.0. (I am a hard rater.) The Afromosia plinth is in good condition. There are definitely signs of wear on the edges and some very slight nicks in places. Nothing is unsightly, but as you look closely you do recognize the plinth is 30 years old. The metal top I would rate as good also. The brushed aluminum has some light scuffing (see pics) but again, nothing close to unsightly. The dust cover is in good to very good condition. No cracks and no deep scratching. A new set of Linn hinges are on their way and will be installed for the new owner.
In terms of upgrades, I have installed the universally hailed Mose-Hercules II 60HZ outboard speed control unit. (Retail over $450 plus shipping from UK.) This is the genuine version, not the cheap imitation making the rounds. The original LP-12 came in 33rpm only, the outboard speed control unit makes it also capable of 45rpm at the press of a button. Note that the outboard unit makes the onboard switch vestigial.
In terms of service, similar to what I do to the AR and Thorens, I have gone completely through the unit, replacing anything that needed to be replaced. The suspension has been adjusted, bearing polished and lubed, and all surfaced detailed with appropriate cleansers.
The SME M2-9 Tonearm
The SME tonearms have been lauded for their excellence for over 40 years. The M2-9 is their latest arm. (Retail $1295) It incorporates many of the classic SME characteristics, yet belongs solidly in the here and now. It can easily handle cartridges in a multi-thousand dollar range. (All box, packing, and literature is included.) I have mounted the arm on a brand-new custom made solid Rosewood armboard. Look closely at the pictures, it is gorgeous. If the new owner desires, the entire unit can be installed in a matching rosewood plinth. Inquire for pricing.
The arm is fully warrantied. If you purchase this table, we can discuss cartridge options as part of the sale. I have several recommendations. If I mount and align your cartridge, it makes set-up in your home incredibly easy, plus you get the peace of mind it’s been done right.
The Details
This table will be packed like it is a fragile pane of glass. I simply care too much for these tables to just shove them in a box. I will carefully pack the table in extra sturdy boxes. and bubble wrap. I prefer Fedex Ground. Lastly, I am truly not in this for the money. What I love best is introducing someone new to the joys of vinyl, getting someone back into vinyl who left it for the “superiority” of cds, or helping someone else who does appreciate it to “move up.” In that regard, I do what few sellers do…if the buyer needs it, I can supply up to one hour of help by phone with set up. (At a mutually arranged time.) In general, most buyers don’t need it, but if there IS a problem, I am there. Your table is guaranteed to look and work as described, or you may return it within ten days of arrival for a full refund, minus return shipping charges. After ten days, all returns are for merchandise credit only.
